Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Ministry of Information has issued a clarification regarding its recent communication on the ongoing dialogue surrounding the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Bill.
In a public notice dated January 6, 2025, the Ministry addressed concerns that arose from its statement referencing a meeting on December 30, 2024. The initial communication suggested that Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles had formally endorsed proposed amendments to the Bill, an interpretation the Ministry has now clarified.
“We have since engaged with the Archbishop to address any misunderstandings,” the Ministry stated. “During these discussions, the Archbishop expressed his appreciation for the Government’s willingness to engage and accommodate the concerns of religious leaders.”
The Ministry emphasized that while the Archbishop and the Inter-Religious Council have participated in engagements regarding the Bill, they have not issued any public or formal declarations about the proposed amendments.
“We believe the Archbishop is reassured of the Ministry’s commitment to listening to all voices for the good of Sierra Leone,” the statement read.
The Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to fostering constructive dialogue with all stakeholders, particularly the religious community, to ensure solutions that uphold the nation’s diverse values.
“We encourage all stakeholders to continue contributing constructively to discussions for the advancement of the Bill and our collective national progress,” the Ministry urged.
The Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Bill has sparked nationwide discussions, highlighting the importance of inclusive and respectful engagement in addressing sensitive national issues.
