The Minister of Employment, Labour, and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, in a three-day Migration Conference in Addis Ababa, has called on global leaders and development partners to support Sierra Leonean migrants caught up in the Israeli-Lebanon War.
Minister Swaray made this call during the 2024 Regional Review of Implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration in Africa held on the 8-10th of October 2024.
The Minister informed the gathering that, the current situation of stranded Sierra Leonean female migrants in Lebanon is a grave concern to the Government of Sierra Leone. He lamented that the deteriorating security situation in Lebanon has left citizens in increasingly vulnerable and precarious conditions.
“These women are crying out for help, and it is our moral and humanitarian duty to respond urgently to their pleas. We call upon Global Compact for Migration Countries and our development partners to stand in solidarity with Sierra Leone and offer the necessary support to evacuate our citizens swiftly and safely,” Minister Swaray said.
With a sense of collective responsibility, Minister Swaray urged partners to protect the dignity, rights, and safety of all migrants, especially those trapped in dangerous circumstances.
“Let us act now before the situation worsens,” Minister Swaray warned.
