Freetown, Sierra Leone – November 27, 2023
Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Timothy Kabba, is poised to welcome a distinguished delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Government of Nigeria at the Freetown International Airport, Lungi.
In a strongly worded press statement released yesterday, ECOWAS condemned the recent attack on Wilberforce Barracks, denouncing the resulting disturbance of peace and democracy in Sierra Leone.
The regional body emphasized the urgent need for decisive action against the perpetrators.
Minister Timothy Kabba, in a series of posts on X, expressed his unwavering commitment to upholding democracy in Sierra Leone.
He stated, “Yesterday’s resistance against the unconstitutional attempt to usurp the people’s power represented the truest strength of our Democracy—a nation of tenacity and resilience. We will not give up! Our shared responsibility to protect and build a better Sierra Leone still lives on.”
Highlighting the collective efforts to thwart the mutiny, Kabba acknowledged the crucial role played by the country’s armed forces under the command of President Bio. He also lauded the solidarity shown by ECOWAS and the Mano River Union (MRU) member states.
In a gesture of gratitude, Kabba extended his thanks to the U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Ambassador Bryan, for unwavering support throughout the crisis. He remarked, “Your great support to Sierra Leone’s democracy was evident as you followed up with me throughout the day to ensure democracy survives.” Kabba also expressed appreciation to all resident embassies in Freetown for standing with the people of Sierra Leone in defense of democracy.
As Sierra Leone navigates these challenging times, the high-powered ECOWAS delegation’s visit underscores the regional commitment to stability and democratic governance.
