Freetown, October 23rd, 2024 – At the Ministry of Information and Civic Education’s weekly press conference on Tuesday, Minister of Health Dr. Austin Demby provided critical updates on Sierra Leone’s ongoing healthcare efforts, addressing growing concerns about a potential doctors’ strike.
The concerns stem from delays in fuel allocations, which are essential for doctors to travel and perform their duties, particularly in remote areas.
Acknowledging the issue raised by the Medical and Dental Association, Dr. Demby reassured the public that the government had already allocated funds for the first two quarters and is actively working to resolve outstanding payments for the remaining quarters.
“We recognize the sacrifices our doctors make, and we are working tirelessly to ensure their needs are met, including fuel allocations that are crucial to their work,” Dr. Demby said, emphasizing the government’s commitment to healthcare workers.
In a heartfelt appeal, Dr. Demby urged doctors to continue serving the public, despite the logistical challenges they face. He highlighted the ethical responsibility of medical professionals during difficult times.
“I urge our doctors to show compassion for the people of Sierra Leone and continue their invaluable service to the nation as we resolve this matter,” he stated, underscoring the government’s recognition of doctors’ pivotal role in national development and the effort to address their concerns.
The Ministry’s updates come at a crucial time when the public and healthcare sector alike are awaiting a resolution to prevent disruptions in medical services across the country.
