As part of his nationwide agricultural tour to assess the progress of the Feed Salone initiative and its impact on the lives of Sierra Leoneans, His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio today visited his 1,000-acre cashew farm in Bo District that has currently created jobs for 150 Sierra Leoneans.
He later performed a symbolic harvest of a 60-hectare maize farm in Moyamba District.
During the visit, President Bio showcased his role as a Master Farmer, describing his cashew farm as a demonstration of leadership by example under the Feed Salone vision.
He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transforming agriculture into a profitable business that creates jobs, increases food security, and promotes self-sufficiency across the country.
Touring his big cashew farm, President Bio emphasized that farming remains one of the most sustainable ways to empower communities and strengthen the national economy.
He encouraged Sierra Leoneans, especially young people, to invest in agriculture and take advantage of opportunities provided through the Feed Salone programme.
The President later joined young Sierra Leonean farmer, Ms. Sherilyn Cowan, for the symbolic harvesting of her 60-hectare maize farm, supported by the AfDB funded Sierra Leone Agribusiness Rice Value Chain Support through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS).
He commended Ms. Cowan for her courage and innovation in large-scale maize production, noting that her work aligns perfectly with the government’s vision of youth-led agribusiness and inclusive national development.
Ms. Cowan thanked President Bio for revitalizing agriculture and creating opportunities for young people to thrive in the sector.
Following the event, the Ministry visited a Military Farm supported by the Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP) as well as a Seed Multiplication Site, encouraging farmers and communities to join hands and Feed Salone.
The event attracted senior government officials, local authorities, and community members, all of whom celebrated the growing momentum of Feed Salone as a national movement toward food sovereignty and prosperity.
