Freetown, 20 August 2026 – The Ministry of Information and Civic Education has issued a public notice clarifying that Sierra Leoneans are not banned from travelling to or transiting through Guinea.
Citizens with valid travel documents who meet the relevant immigration and security requirements may continue to travel for legitimate purposes.
However, the Government has drawn a clear line on irregular movement. Restrictions apply to Sierra Leoneans seeking to use Guinea as a transit route for migration or overseas employment outside established procedures.
Guinean authorities have raised concerns about cases involving irregular migration, suspected human trafficking, and unverified overseas employment arrangements.
The notice stresses that Sierra Leoneans intending to travel abroad for employment must follow the lawful recruitment, labour and immigration procedures. All overseas employment arrangements should be verified through the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security before travel.
Citizens are strongly advised not to use Guinea or other transit routes to bypass these official processes. Following the proper channels, the Ministry said, helps protect travellers from trafficking, exploitation, fraudulent job offers, and unnecessary travel difficulties.
Sierra Leoneans who encounter problems while travelling through Guinea are urged to contact the Sierra Leone Embassy in Conakry for consular assistance on +224 621 048 214.
The Government said it will continue to work with Guinean authorities and other international partners to facilitate legitimate travel and protect Sierra Leonean citizens.
