FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE – 20 AUGUST 2026 – Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, has called for stronger policy coherence and coordination across government to ensure that national policies translate into tangible results for citizens.
He made the call on Thursday 20 August while opening the National Symposium on Policy Coherence, Coordination and State Effectiveness at the Foreign Affairs Acedemy, stressing that Sierra Leone’s challenge was not a shortage of policies, but it was about the need for institutions to work together effectively to implement and deliver national development priorities.
VP Juldeh Jalloh said issues such as food security, youth employment and healthcare required coordinated action because they cut across the responsibilities of multiple ministries, departments and agencies.
He noted that government must move away from working in silos and ensure that policy decisions were informed by evidence and realities on the ground. He cited challenges in the health sector, including unreliable electricity affecting hospitals and medical equipment, as an example of why effective policy coordination was essential to improving service delivery.
The Vice President linked stronger policy coordination to His Excellency President Dr Julius Maada Bio’s public sector reform agenda, aimed at building a more efficient, professional, responsive and results-oriented public service.
He urged public servants to measure success by the results policies deliver rather than simply by the production of policy documents or the launch of programmes.
VP Juldeh Jalloh called for policies to be supported by clear institutional responsibilities, realistic financing, effective implementation plans, measurable outcomes and regular monitoring and review. He stressed that with limited resources and competing national priorities, government cannot afford duplication or fragmentation, urging public institutions to work together to maximise available resources and translate Sierra Leone’s national development agenda into meaningful improvements in the lives of citizens.
