ABUJA, Nigeria – July 14, 2026 – Former President of Sierra Leone Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has expressed profound gratitude following the announcement that criminal proceedings against him have been officially discontinued.
In a statement issued today from Abuja, Nigeria, where he has been staying, Koroma confirmed that the Honourable Attorney-General and Minister of Justice of Sierra Leone had discontinued the case in accordance with the laws of the Republic.
“I received the announcement by the Honourable Attorney-General and Minister of Justice that the criminal proceedings instituted against me have been discontinued,” Koroma said. “I therefore thank the Almighty God for the infinite grace and mercy to me and my family throughout this difficult period.”
The former president, who led Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018, emphasized his enduring faith in divine providence and the principles of peace, justice, and reconciliation. He acknowledged the role played by current President Julius Maada Bio and the Government of Sierra Leone, noting that their efforts were guided by the Constitution and the rule of law.
Koroma also extended appreciation to regional leaders, particularly commending the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for its commitment to peace and dialogue. He singled out Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for special thanks, highlighting his “exemplary leadership, personal commitment and steadfast support.”
“I am especially indebted to His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu… for his exemplary leadership,” Koroma stated.
He further expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Nigeria, as well as National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for the hospitality and support extended to him during his time in Abuja.
Reflecting on Sierra Leone’s history, the former president noted the country’s resilience in overcoming challenges through unity and national interest over personal considerations.
“Our country has overcome far greater trials because we have always found the wisdom to place nation above self, to build bridges of understanding, strengthen the bonds that unite us and work together,” he said.
Koroma reaffirmed his commitment to efforts that promote peace, strengthen democracy, and improve the welfare of Sierra Leoneans.
The statement comes amid broader regional diplomatic engagement aimed at fostering stability in West Africa.
