Freetown, Sierra Leone – President Julius Maada Bio has appointed Professor Joe A.D. Alie as the new Chancellor of Eastern Technical University (ETU) of Sierra Leone, in line with Section 7(1) of the Universities Act, No. 5 of 2021.
Professor Alie, a distinguished historian and academic, assumes the university’s highest ceremonial office. In this role, he will preside over formal convocations, confer degrees, and provide high-level leadership and oversight as outlined in the Act.
The appointment marks a significant milestone for Eastern Technical University as it strengthens its governance structure under the 2021 Universities Act, which modernized higher education frameworks in Sierra Leone. The legislation supports the establishment and operation of institutions like ETU, aimed at advancing technical education, research, and innovation across the country.
About Professor Joe A.D. Alie
Born in Moyamba in Sierra Leone’s southern region, Professor Alie is a Professor of History at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. He earned his Bachelor of Arts with Honours and Master of Arts in Modern History from the same institution, later obtaining a PhD and Certificate in African Studies from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in the United States. He also studied education at Milton Margai Teachers College.
With extensive teaching experience both in Sierra Leone and abroad, Professor Alie is recognized as an award-winning writer and educationist. In 2006, the Sierra Leone government honored him with the title of Commander of the Order of the Rokel (COR) for his outstanding contributions to education. He has been actively involved in preserving and promoting Sierra Leone’s history and cultural heritage.

Located in Kenema, the third-largest city in Sierra Leone, Eastern Technical University (formerly associated with Eastern Polytechnic) serves as a key institution for technical and innovative education in the eastern region.
