FREETOWN – A free medical screening event for senior citizens organized by prominent businessman and political figure Jagaban was halted today by the Sierra Leone Police at the Siaka Stevens Mini Stadium in Freetown.
The event, scheduled to coincide with the International Day of Older Persons, was intended to offer health checks and support services to the elderly. Organizers and supporters say it was entirely humanitarian in nature, not politically motivated.
Despite prior planning and public notice, Jagaban and his team were prevented from entering the stadium by police officers acting under orders. As a result, the event was cancelled and many elderly citizens who had gathered in anticipation were sent home disappointed.
In a statement, Jagaban’s supporters emphasized that the incident was not about politics but about caring for vulnerable citizens: “Our elders deserve dignity, respect, and healthcare. No obstacle will stop Jagaban from serving the people of Sierra Leone.”
The cancellation of Wednesday’s health program comes against the backdrop of a previous confrontation between Jagaban and the Sierra Leone Police over a proposed motorbike assembly factory. In August 2025, a ceremony to launch the factory in Kissy (or in 6 Miles/Waterloo area, as various reports state) was disrupted by police officers who stormed the site and canceled the event.
At that time, social media reports and local groups claimed the police acted without offering clear justification, stopping the factory launch at least for a second time.
In response, the State House Communications Director stated that there was no formal blockade and asserted that Jagaban had been advised to follow due process.
The earlier factory incident has heightened public interest in the motives behind the cancellation of today’s screening event, especially among observers who see a pattern of obstruction of Jagaban’s community and business initiatives.
The police have not issued a statement explaining today’s blockage of the health program. Public reaction is already mixed: supporters of Jagaban accuse authorities of suppressing voluntary public service, while others say law enforcement may have acted to prevent an unsanctioned mass gathering.
Why now? Where have been Jagaban when ebola grip the country? Is it now because he wants to disadvantage other aspirant to clinch the flag bearer ship that is why he is doing so.There is nothing for nothing.A businessman always want in return for his spending.
