In a historic moment, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, the Mayor-Elect of Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC), has taken the Oath of office to commence her second five-year term.
The swearing-in ceremony was held on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs.
The ceremony was attended by jubilant supporters and party members who joyfully sang their victory song as Mayor Aki-Sawyerr and her deputy, Kweku Lisk, solemnly pledged to serve the city for another term.
After the ceremony, the Mayor and her deputy received a warm welcome at their office in the City Hall on Wallace Johnson Street.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr also took to social media, expressing her gratitude and commitment to the city.
“Further to the recently signed Agreement For National Unity and the end of the APC non-participation in governance, I took the oath of office today and I am pleased and humbled to serve for a second term as the Mayor of Freetown. May God bless Freetown and bless my service to our city in this second term,” she stated.
This development came after APC on Wednesday, formally announced its commitment to uphold the Communique signed with the Government of Sierra Leone on October 18, 2023. The Communique outlined several agreements, including the APC’s decision to end its non-participation in governance.
The APC acknowledges the letters received from the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs in regards to the swearing-in ceremony for their elected local council representatives.
The swearing-in ceremony for the elected local council representatives in the various regions will be conducted by the Chief Administrator of the respective councils, in accordance with the law.
This development marks a significant moment for Freetown and Mayor Aki-Sawyerr as she continues her mission to “Transform Freetown” in the coming years.
