FREETOWN – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Matilda Jusu as the new Head of its Sierra Leone National Office, marking a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to hold the position in the country.
Jusu, who officially assumed office on 21st August 2025, brings more than two decades of professional experience to the role.
She joined WAEC in 2002 as Assistant Registrar and Subject Officer in the Test Development Division and has since held a range of senior positions.
In 2011, she broke barriers by becoming the first Branch Controller of the newly established Kenema office and the first woman in Sierra Leone to hold such a post.
Her career trajectory includes serving as Officer in Charge of the Results Verification Unit and Professional Examinations (2013–2017), as well as overseeing post-examination activities for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) from 2017 to 2021. Until her new appointment, she served as Acting Head of the Test Development Division.
Jusu holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Sociology and a Diploma in Adult Education from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. She also earned a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Ghana and holds a professional certificate from the Cambridge Assessment Network.
Widely respected for her integrity, meticulous approach, and commitment to educational standards, Jusu is expected to strengthen WAEC’s operations in Sierra Leone and enhance public confidence in the Council’s work.
