Sierra Leone’s football community mourns the untimely demise of Lamin Bangura, a beloved figure in the sport, who tragically lost his life in a fatal accident on the Bo highway.
Bangura, renowned both as a former international player and head coach of Ports Authority, was en route to a scheduled match against Kahunla Rangers in the Leone Rock Premier League when the incident occurred.
Despite efforts to save him, Bangura succumbed to his injuries at Rokupa Hospital in Freetown.
His passing leaves a void in Sierra Leonean football, as he had left an indelible mark both on the field as a player for the Leone Stars and as a coach, notably guiding Diamond Stars to victory in the 2013 Sierra Leone Premier League.
The accident, involving a hired bus carrying the Ports Authority Football Club squad, occurred near Konta Line, Masiaka, prompting concerns about the safety of the team members.
Reports indicate injuries among those associated with the club, with authorities assessing the extent of the damages.
In response to the tragedy, the Sierra Leone Premier League Board has extended its heartfelt sympathies to the affected individuals and announced the cancellation of the scheduled match between Kahunla Rangers and Ports Authority.
The incident remains under investigation, with the Board committed to providing updates as more information becomes available.
