In a somber announcement this Monday morning, Sierra Leone mourns the loss of renowned psychiatrist Dr. Edward Nahim, who breathed his last on January 1st, 2024.
Dr. Nahim played a pivotal role as the sole psychiatrist at the historic Kissy Mental Hospital, colloquially known as ‘Crase Yard,’ the continent’s pioneering mental health institution established in 1827.
Serving as the hospital’s head since 1981, he dedicated his expertise to the comprehensive care of patients, ranging from those grappling with drug abuse to individuals experiencing epilepsy, mental disabilities, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression, and schizophrenia.
With an impressive track record, Dr. Nahim’s biography reveals his unwavering commitment, having treated over 100,000 drug abuse cases, 40,000 patients with epilepsy or mental disabilities, and 20,000 individuals grappling with PTSD.
Additionally, he provided care for another 100,000 patients exhibiting symptoms of major depression and schizophrenia.
Beyond his duties at the Kissy Mental Hospital, Dr. Nahim held prominent positions in Sierra Leone, serving as a Consultant to the Government, Director of the Sierra Leone Psychiatric Hospital, and Medical and Dental Registrar.
His influence extended globally, as he actively contributed to the World Health Organization’s initiatives, notably playing a role in the development of the Rapid Assessment of Mental Health Needs for Refugees, Displaced, and Conflict-Affected Populations.
Dr. Edward Nahim’s impact on mental health and his humanitarian efforts, including the demobilization of child and adult soldiers post the decade-long civil war, mark him as an irreplaceable figure.
Sierra Leone grieves the loss of not just a prominent psychiatrist but a compassionate advocate for mental well-being and global mental health initiatives.
