A recent development in the ongoing saga surrounding the failed section of the Masiaka – Port Loko Road reveals significant progress.
A team of engineers from the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA), led by Deputy Director General Ing. Alfred Jalil Momodu, conducted a thorough assessment on Friday, August 4, 2023.
The primary objectives of the visit were to determine the extent of the failure, investigate its causes, and propose viable solutions for restoration.
One of the focal points of the investigation involved a visit to the CTC Mining Company’s operations site. The company had faced accusations regarding its vehicles’ involvement in causing the road damage.
Through interviews with company representatives and by measuring the weight of loaded trucks on-site, the SLRA team substantiated claims that the vehicles, especially when transporting bauxite material, exceeded permissible weight limits for the route.
During their inspection along the Masiaka – Port Loko Road, the SLRA team also uncovered other emerging failures that demanded attention. This led them to the precise failed section of the road that necessitated a more in-depth investigation.
In a pivotal turn of events, the CTC Mining Company acknowledged its responsibility for the road damage and expressed a willingness to cover the costs associated with the necessary repairs. The SLRA is set to provide a comprehensive assessment report outlining the extent of the damage and the estimated cost for rectifying the failed sections of the road.
In the interim, a collaborative effort between CTC engineers and SLRA’s Port Loko District Engineer is underway. This joint initiative aims to carry out emergency remedial maintenance on the severely damaged section to prevent further deterioration while awaiting the subsequent comprehensive maintenance efforts.
This newfound cooperation between the SLRA and CTC Mining Company marks a significant step towards resolving the challenges posed by the failed section of the Masiaka – Port Loko Road. As stakeholders work hand in hand, the focus remains on restoring the road’s functionality and ensuring safe travel for all.
