In a letter addressed to the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, dated April 22, 2024, the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) has reminded the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education of the non-payment of school fees subsidies for the second and third terms of this school year 2023/24.
The letter signed by the Secretary General of the Union, Mitch Morris S. Conteh emphasized that Performance Based Financing (PBF) funds for schools remain outstanding for the current academic year.
The Union underscored the potential repercussions of delayed payments on the government’s flagship program, Free Quality Education, stating, “If such a situation continues to persist it has the tendency to undermine the government’s flagship programme of Free Quality Education.”
The letter stressed the critical importance of timely disbursement of school fee subsidies to ensure a smooth conclusion of the academic year.
The teachers expressed hope for urgent action on the matter, emphasizing the significance of these funds in facilitating a successful educational environment.
The Union awaits prompt attention and resolution from the Ministry, as indicated in the closing remarks of the letter: “We look forward to the urgent payments of the outstanding funds.”
The communication was copied to key stakeholders, including the Chief Education Officer of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education and the President of the Sierra Leone Teachers’ Union (SLTU).
