A high-level delegation from the Government of Sierra Leone, led by the Honorable Minister of Finance, Mr. Sheku F. Bangura, has concluded successful technical negotiations with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) in Washington DC.
The negotiations, which took place on May 9th, 2024, centered around a $481 million compact program aimed at advancing Sierra Leone’s energy infrastructure.
The compact, once implemented, will play a pivotal role in fostering the development of a sustainable transmission and distribution energy network across Sierra Leone. This initiative is poised to catalyze rapid economic growth over the medium to long term, providing a significant boost to the nation’s socio-economic landscape.
Pending approval by the MCC board, scheduled for June 26th, 2024, the compact will then proceed to the US Congress for ratification. Subsequently, it will be formally endorsed through an official signing ceremony between the Government of Sierra Leone and the MCC in the summer of 2024.
The Sierra Leonean delegation, comprising key government officials and representatives from various ministries and agencies, including the Minister of State in the office of the Vice President, Madam Manty Tarawally, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mohamed L. Tarawalie, the Deputy Minister 1 of Energy and Power, Dr. Eldred Taylor, and the Financial Secretary, Mr. Matthew Dingie, among others, participated in the negotiations.
The culmination of the negotiations was marked by a celebratory moment, as delegates gathered atop the MCC building in Washington DC for a ceremonial cake-cutting event, symbolizing the shared commitment to fostering sustainable development and partnership between Sierra Leone and the MCC.
