Responding to online appeals for a protest targeting the Government of Sierra Leone, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) delivered an uncompromising message on Thursday, cautioning individuals involved in orchestrating the proposed demonstration.
During a customary press briefing held at the SLP headquarters on George Street, Freetown, the police vehemently stated, “We want to emphasize that the circulating calls for a protest scheduled from August 7th to 14th, 2023, via various social media platforms, are illegal and will not be tolerated.”
While acknowledging citizens’ rights to demonstrate, a privilege protected by the Public Order Act, the SLP leadership highlighted the Act’s provision requiring organizers of planned protests to secure police clearance before conducting their activities.
At present, the SLP leadership confirmed that no official request has been received regarding the impending protest. They stressed the importance of following proper protocols for submitting requests and emphasized that social media should not be used to initiate such requests.
Law enforcement officials expressed concern that these planned protests are aimed at destabilizing the state.
Urging citizens not to participate in these unauthorized activities, the SLP warned that stringent measures will be taken to prevent any actions against the state.
Referencing last year’s events, where protest calls resulted in unfortunate casualties among both police officers and civilians, the SLP highlighted a link between the recent calls and individuals living abroad.
“Those encouraging you to protest have hidden agendas to manipulate you into disrupting the state. Remain vigilant and avoid becoming pawns in their scheme,” cautioned the police.
Assuring the public, the SLP reaffirmed that the nation remains peaceful and the security apparatus is firmly in control. The police further guaranteed the safety of law-abiding citizens.
