In a recent development, Dr. Jeredine George, a specialist Obstetrician Gynaecologist, has reportedly been replaced as the Medical Superintendent for the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH), commonly known as Cottage Hospital.
The news comes after Dr. George’s heartfelt plea regarding the detrimental effects of power shortages on patient care.
Opposition leader in the Sierra Leone Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, highlighted the situation in a social media post, stating, “Now I know why Doctors are afraid to talk about the lack of electricity in almost all government hospitals at night. Dr. Jeredine George, specialist Obstetrician Gynaecologist who said they lost a child due to lack of electricity and sincerely cried for help, has been replaced.”
The government, through the Ministry of Health, issued a statement appointing Dr. Amadu Sesay, an Obstetrician-Gynecologist, as the acting Medical Superintendent for PCMH.
According to the announcement, Dr. Sesay’s appointment is effective immediately, made through the Ministry of Health Office of the Chief Medical Officer.
Dr. George’s initial social media post shed light on the dire consequences of power outages at the hospital, revealing the challenges faced by healthcare workers and patients alike.
The blackout led to using phone torches for examinations and left patients in need of oxygen, including unborn babies, without essential care. Tragically, a baby was lost due to distress before delivery, underscoring the urgent need for uninterrupted power supply in medical facilities.
Despite efforts to mitigate the impact through a solar power system and limited generator use, the hospital struggled to meet basic needs, leading to surgeries being performed under challenging conditions and medication administration in the dark.
Dr. George’s plea for assistance goes beyond raising awareness, emphasizing the need for tangible support to ensure patients receive adequate care.
The outcry also highlights the disparity in healthcare provision, with the children’s hospital on the same compound enjoying uninterrupted power.
As Dr. George’s message gains momentum on social media, she hopes it will catalyze much-needed reforms to prevent further loss of life due to inadequate infrastructure.
Despite the challenges, Dr. George expresses gratitude to her colleagues and calls for recognition and support for their dedication in serving patients.
