The eagerly awaited results of the 2023 National Primary School Examination (NPSE) have been released by the West African Examination Council (WAEC), bringing joy and excitement to students, parents, and educators across Sierra Leone.
The NPSE is a crucial assessment conducted annually to determine the academic performance of primary school students and their eligibility for progression to secondary education.
With an increase of approximately 1% in entries compared to the previous year, a total of 163,860 candidates from 4,790 primary schools participated in the 2023 NPSE. This figure comprised 80,129 boys and 83,731 girls, demonstrating a higher representation of female candidates.
Out of the total number of candidates who sat for at least one subject, 175 were absent for all subjects. The highest aggregate T-score obtained in the 2023 NPSE was an impressive 339, showcasing the exceptional academic achievements of some students.
The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has announced that 133,129 candidates successfully passed the NPSE in 2023, surpassing the previous year’s figures. This includes 67,848 girls and 65,281 boys, indicating a marginal increase in the overall pass rate of 81.3% compared to 2022. The boys’ pass rate stood at 81.6%, while the girls’ pass rate reached 81.1%. Notably, despite the slightly lower pass rate for girls, a greater number of girls both sat for and passed the examination, highlighting their commitment and dedication to education.
Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Hon. Dr. Minkailu Bah, expressed his delight at the overall success of the 2023 NPSE. He praised the students for their hard work, resilience, and determination, as well as the teachers and parents for their unwavering support throughout the academic journey.
