Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, has declared a national emergency on drug and substance abuse, with a particular focus on the synthetic drug known as Kush.
In a televised address to the nation on Thursday, April 4, 2024, President Bio underscored the grave threat posed by drug abuse, especially Kush, to the nation’s youth and societal fabric.
President Bio emphasized the devastating impact of drug addiction on families and communities, stressing the urgent need for action to address the escalating crisis.
He stated, “As a government, we say, enough is enough. As a nation, we say, enough is enough.”
The president highlighted the indiscriminate nature of the Kush epidemic, affecting individuals regardless of class, ethnicity, gender, or religion.
He lamented the toll it has taken on communities, tearing apart families and depriving Sierra Leone of its future leaders.
Acknowledging the global nature of the synthetic drug crisis, President Bio outlined a comprehensive five-part strategy for a drug-free future. This strategy includes prevention through awareness campaigns, establishment of accessible treatment centers, provision of social services support, law enforcement efforts, and community engagement.
To spearhead these efforts, President Bio announced the formation of a National Task Force on Drugs and Substance Abuse (NaTFDSA), comprising various governmental and non-governmental stakeholders.
This multi-sectoral approach aims to combat the rising Kush crisis at all levels of society.
President Bio assured the public of intensified efforts to educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse through school programs, community outreach, and media campaigns. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of rehabilitation and treatment facilities to support those struggling with addiction.
President Bio further vowed to crack down on drug trafficking and distribution networks, empowering law enforcement agencies and prioritizing drug-related cases in the judiciary.
In closing, President Bio called for collective action from citizens, communities, and sectors of society to overcome the drug epidemic and build a brighter, drug-free future. He urged youths to channel their energy towards constructive endeavors and warned perpetrators of drug-related crimes that their time is up.
The president’s declaration signals a firm commitment to addressing the Kush epidemic and safeguarding the well-being of Sierra Leone’s citizens.
