The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has initiated investigations on December 1, 2023, delving into allegations of corruption surrounding secondary school Principals during the ongoing SSS1 admission process.
The impetus for this inquiry stemmed from a viral video circulating on social media, purportedly featuring a student from Annie Walsh Memorial School (AWMS) accusing the school’s principal of engaging in extortion.
Acting swiftly, MBSSE Minister Conrad Sackey, alongside a specialized team, took immediate action starting on Saturday, November 25, 2023. Their focus began with Western Area Grade A School Principals, who were promptly summoned to a meeting at the Ministry’s Conference Room.
During this meeting, the principals were instructed to provide their 2023/2024 SSS1 admission list, complete with attached BECE results of admitted pupils, and the SSS1 repeaters list. This documentation was then submitted to the Teaching Service Commission (TSC).
The MBSSE, in collaboration with the TSC, is set to meticulously scrutinize these lists against the schools’ applicant results and their previous SSS1 class registers. Spearheading this comprehensive examination are Chief Education Officer Professor Yatta Kanu and TSC Chairperson Mr. Lansana Kelfala.
The primary objective is to identify instances of enrolling students with grades below the agreed cut-off grades and without the Ministry’s approval.
Additionally, the investigation seeks to uncover any enrollment of repeater students who were not included in the previous year’s class register.
The subsequent actions will be informed by the findings derived from this thorough examination of the provided documents.
