Kissy, Freetown – Sierra Leone has taken a major step toward energy independence with the groundbreaking of the Nant Power Plant Project in Kissy, a landmark initiative poised to transform the nation’s electricity supply.
The 105-megawatt combined-cycle facility is the country’s first large-scale independent power project and is expected to deliver a steady and reliable source of energy.
By using modern combined-cycle technology—where natural gas and steam turbines work together—the plant promises higher efficiency and lower emissions, marking a shift toward sustainable power generation.
At the launch ceremony, government officials, energy experts, and community leaders described the project as a turning point for the country’s long-troubled energy sector.
Energy Minister representatives highlighted that stable electricity will not only improve daily life for households but also attract new investment and stimulate economic growth.
Residents in the surrounding communities welcomed the development, expressing hope that consistent power will reduce reliance on costly generators and support local businesses.
When completed, the Nant Power Plant is expected to significantly expand Sierra Leone’s grid capacity, providing the reliable electricity supply needed to power industry, create jobs, and improve living standards nationwide.
