In a public notice released on 10 May 2024, the Freetown City Council (FCC) announced its decision to enforce a strict “No Street Trading” policy on 23 designated streets within the municipality of Freetown starting Monday, May 13, 2024.
The decision follows extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders and exhaustive sensitization efforts in collaboration with the Trader’s Council.
The streets affected by this enforcement include:
1. Siaka Stevens Street (commencing from Wilberforce Street)
2. Wellington Street
3. Waterloo Street (Big and Small)
4. Walpole Street
5. Lamina Sankoh Street
6. George Street
7. Gloucester Street
8. Charlotte Street
9. Sanders Street
10. St. John Roundabout
11. Bathurst Street
12. Circular Road (stopping at Truscot Church)
13. Howe Street (Lower Howe Street)
14. Wilberforce Street (Lower Wilberforce Street)
15. Lightfoot Boston Street (except for between Pultney and Percival Street)
16. Wallace Johnson Street
17. Pademba Road
18. Wilkinson Road
19. Campbell Street
20. Hill Cot Road
21. Hill Station
22. Jomo Kenyatta Road
23. Congo Cross Main Road
According to Koma Hasan-Kamara, the FCC IEC Officer, any trader found liable for trading on any of these streets commits an offense punishable by a fine not exceeding NLE5000.00 or six months imprisonment or both, pursuant to the Local Government Act, 2022.
This move aims to streamline street trading activities and enhance the overall management of public spaces within the city.
The FCC urges all traders and residents to adhere strictly to the new regulations to ensure a conducive and orderly urban environment.
