In a significant development, the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has successfully secured additional financing under the Enhancing Sierra Leone Energy Access Project (ESLEAP).
This boost in funding comes as a crucial step in ensuring uninterrupted energy access for the people of Sierra Leone.
The World Bank has granted an additional $13 million in the form of an IDA grant, bringing the total IDA financing for the project to an impressive $63 million.
It’s worth noting that the parent project, initially supported by a $50 million IDA grant, was approved on January 28, 2021, and became effective in May of the same year.
This new infusion of funds is strategically designed to help EDSA overcome the challenges posed by the geopolitical developments in Ukraine.
With the energy market facing increased costs due to the Ukraine-Russia conflict, this financing will play a pivotal role in ensuring the stability of Sierra Leone’s electricity distribution. The goal is clear: to “keep the lights on” and maintain uninterrupted power supply throughout the nation.
This development underscores the commitment of the Ministry of Energy and the World Bank to improving energy access in Sierra Leone and bolstering the resilience of the country’s energy infrastructure in the face of global challenges.
The people of Sierra Leone can look forward to a more secure and reliable energy future as a result of this significant financial support.
