In a resounding recognition of their stellar performance during the June 24, 2023, multi-tier elections in Sierra Leone, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has garnered praise from both local and international observers.
The elections, hailed as one of the most peaceful in the nation’s history, demonstrated the SLP’s commitment to maintaining law and order during crucial electoral processes.
Building on this remarkable achievement, Ambassador Abdel Fatau Musah, Commissioner for Political Affairs for Peace and Security in the ECOWAS Commission, reached out to Sierra Leone’s Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, on July 26, 2023.
Ambassador Musah requested that the SLP designate a focal officer responsible for Elections Security Management to participate in an experience-sharing and capacity-building workshop aimed at enhancing the role of the police in ensuring Electoral Security and Participatory Democracy in Liberia.
Responding to this significant request, Inspector General Fayia Sellu appointed Chief Superintendent of Police Augustine Kamara, Head of SLP Electoral Security Management, to represent the organization.
CSP Kamara embarked on his journey to Liberia on September 12, 2023, with the workshop scheduled to take place from September 13 to September 16, 2023.
During the workshop, Mr. Kamara delivered lectures on various thematic areas, including Standard Guidelines on Elections Security Management Planning, Needs Assessment/Threat Assessments, Electoral Security Coordination, Gap Assessment, Deployment of Security Personnel, and Post-Elections Security. His contributions were instrumental in developing a comprehensive work plan for all phases of elections: Before, During, and After the Electioneering Processes.
Participants at the workshop included representatives from Liberia’s various security sectors, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), media, and peace actors. Brigadier General Foyor, a member of Liberia’s security sector, expressed gratitude to the SLP for their invaluable contributions to the learning experience in Liberia.
Ambassador Abdel Fatau Musah extended his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Inspector General William Fayia Sellu for granting ECOWAS’ request for SLP’s participation in this enlightening workshop.
