In a significant political development, the Leader of the opposition National Grand Coalition (NGC), Hon. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella (KKY), is poised to officially join the ranks of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).
A momentous declaration and welcoming ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow, the 14th of October, 2023, at the SLPP headquarters in Freetown.
SLPP Chairman Prince Harding has extended an invitation to all party members to witness this historic event. Members are expected to be seated by 11:30 am, ahead of the arrival of President Bio.
Yumkella, who was once regarded as one of the few principled politicians in Sierra Leone, is making the transition to the Bio-led SLPP, where he previously campaigned for the party’s leadership and presidential candidacy in 2015.
His previous affiliation with the SLPP ended prior to the 2018 elections, as he faced difficulties accessing party offices in Bo and Freetown, and his membership was not acknowledged by the party executive. Subsequently, he left the party to establish the NGC in 2017 and later contested for the presidency in the following year.
In the lead-up to the general elections in June this year, the NGC and SLPP agreed on a strategic progressive alliance aimed at forming an inclusive government with ministerial and other appointments for NGC members if President Bio emerges as the winner of the presidential elections. As a result, President Bio appointed Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella as Chairman of the Special Initiative for Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security in Sierra Leone.
In response, Yumkella expressed his gratitude to the President for the trust and confidence placed in his abilities and has vowed to work tirelessly to realize President Bio’s vision of a more progressive, prosperous, and inclusive Sierra Leone.
