In a recent statement released on April 22nd, 2024, the All Peoples Congress (APC) voiced deep concern over the rampant spread of Kush within the nation, labeling it a grave threat to the well-being of Sierra Leone’s youth.
The party staunchly condemned all facets of the Kush trade, including its sale, use, manufacture, supply, and distribution, throwing its full support behind law enforcement, the justice system, and parliamentary efforts to eradicate this scourge from society.
“The fight against Kush must transcend political divides,” emphasized the APC, stressing the need for unified action to sever the drug’s supply chains.
The party underscored the urgency of decisive measures to combat Kush trafficking networks, emphasizing that failure to unite in this endeavor is not an option.
Calling for a collective awakening among Sierra Leoneans and the global community, the APC urged urgent, coordinated, and comprehensive action to dismantle drug trafficking networks and secure a brighter future for the nation’s youth.
While expressing solidarity with the government’s anti-Kush initiatives, the APC opposed the proposed declaration of a State of Emergency, advocating instead for a State of Public Health Emergency.
This designation, the party argued, should focus exclusively on health-related responses and be implemented for a strictly limited duration to prevent misuse for political gain.
“The APC insists on strict adherence to constitutional provisions, particularly Section 29, which safeguards against the abuse of detention powers,” the statement reiterated, emphasizing the need for checks and balances to prevent arbitrary targeting of political opponents.
Committing to upholding the rights and well-being of all citizens, the APC pledged unwavering dedication to finding a solution that upholds both the rule of law and public health.
