In a significant development on Monday, Abubakar Boxx Konteh, the Organizing Secretary of the All People’s Congress in Sierra Leone’s North West Region, was released from police custody after being granted bail.
Konteh had been detained by Guinean authorities since March, along with four other Sierra Leoneans, on charges related to the illegal smuggling of synthetic drugs into Guinea.
This evening, Boxx Movement released a statement expressing relief and gratitude following his release.
“Our brother, friend, and comrade, Mr. Abu Bakarr Konteh (DJ Boxx), has been released on bail today, 16th April 2024. We extend our deepest appreciation to everyone who supported, advocated, and contributed to his release. The efforts of the Free Boxx Movement and all supporters have been instrumental, and the Konteh family is immensely thankful,” they stated.
According to Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Information and Civic Education, Konteh was apprehended while attempting to escape to Senegal through Guinea airport.
He faces allegations of aiding in the planning and execution of the failed November 26, 2023 coup, as well as being involved in the trafficking of dangerous substances like Kush in Sierra Leone.
“Mr. Konteh’s extradition to Sierra Leone on April 12, 2024, was a necessary step to further investigate his alleged roles in these serious offenses,” the Ministry stated in a press release.
As the legal proceedings continue, the community and his supporters remain hopeful that Mr. Konteh will fully clear his name while advocating for his legal rights and due process.
