The Sierra Leone Police intercepted 31 presumed victims of human trafficking on Friday May 31, 2024 at the Gbalamuya border post in Kambia on board two separate Taxi cars.
This is according to a statement issued today by the National Secretariat Anti-Trafficking in Persons Task Force.
According to preliminary investigations one set was heading to Niger and the other to Mali via Conakry. Guinea.
They included 10 women who claimed to be traveling with 21 of their own children—12 girls and 9 boys with ages ranging from 6 months to 15 years.
At the moment all of the women and children have been provided temporary shelter at a care facility operated by the NGO SHADE, through the intervention of the Ministry of Social Welfare and some child protection organizations in Kambia.
No word yet on who was facilitating the movement of these women and children, as Police continue their investigations.
Police may also look into unconfirmed reports that criminals are operating sprawling and lucrative street begging networks involving women and children in some West African countries.
